Wedding Unity Candle Ceremonies

Wedding unity candle ceremonies are a wonderful tradition that has gained in popularity over the last 20 to 30 years. The wedding candle ceremony is used to symbolize the joining together of two families and the couple's commitment and love to one another.

Traditionally, two taper candles are lit (usually by the mothers) at the beginning of the wedding ceremony. Then, the bride and groom each take a candle and together light the center pillar candle.

This is the customary practice, however there are other types of wedding unity candle ceremonies that you may wish to consider.

Those of you joining as blended (step) families may want to use a family candle set and include your children in the lighting. Another option is to include extra tapers so that each set of parents may also join in the lighting of the center unity candle or may step up and light their tapers from the main candle.

Perhaps there are other people you wish to honor as well. Whatever the case, feel free to make up your own ritual for unique wedding unity candle ceremonies, as you desire. There are no hard and fast rules regarding this fairly new tradition.
